Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin knows how to deal with outspoken wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Beckham, who was caught crying on the sideline recently and had quarterback Eli Manning admit he’s doing this to himself, certainly classifies as a distraction for the Giants at the moment.
Coughlin wasn’t afraid to call Beckham a distraction while offering both praise and help at the same time, as he said during CBS Sports’ We Need to Talk:
He really believes that he is at his best at the top of his passion. He is so talented. I don’t think there’s anything the kid can’t do. He is a good kid. He is a team guy in the team room. It’s just when he gets on the field, there’s only one way he knows how to play.
For his own good [he needs to learn to channel his passion]. And I would love to try to help him in this regard because I think so highly of him. … [But] he is a distraction.
This is the absolute truth when it comes to Beckham’s behavior. Gifted atheltes such as himself spend their whole life dominating the competition and receiving endless praise. There isn’t anything close to the pressure of performing at a high level in the pros, though, and Beckham has hit a wall called reality—he’s not going to bend everyone he encounters to his will and criticism will follow.
Honestly, Coughlin offering Beckham some guidance might be one of the best possible things that could happen for the the star wideout right now. The Giants are Ben McAdoo’s team, but any help might be welcome to get Beckham back on track.
Coughlin’s offered idea is a win-win for all involved.
