We’re on the cusp of free agency frenzy, so expect a few headlines to heat up this week. We already know Dez Bryant will be franchised by the Cowboys, but what else are the Cowboys working on this week.
Here are my headlines to keep an eye on:
1. Cole Beasley’s agent has been in talks with the Cowboys since the NFL Combine and talks are leading to a new contract. It would be in the best interest to get Beasley locked down before free agency kicks off. If a deal is not hammered out this week, it’s expected that the Cowboys would assign a 2nd round tender, which would not be enough to deter another team from giving him an offersheet. Beasley is a 3rd down converting machine and has been a nice goto option for Tony Romo.
2. Brandon Carr will either accept a salary reduction this week or the Cowboys will likely release him right before the 10th, just as they did last year with DeMarcus Ware. I expect us to hear more news on this front to trickle out this week. Either way, the Cowboys are going to need to add more bodies in the secondary.
3. The Cowboys need to see what they are going to do with Sterling Moore, and for me there should not be a second thought. Sign Moore to an extension and add another young rookie into the mix to compete. With Carr’s lack of production and Claiborne’s playing future in serious doubt, they need to cover themselves by keeping Moore.
4. Doug Free or Jeremy Parnell news will come out this week. We should find out what the plan is for Right Tackle this week. To me, the Cowboys decision to let DeMarco Murray test free agency likely means, that money will go to either Free of Parnell. I’m hoping the Cowboys will keep Free and keep the offensive line continuity going.
5. Adrian Peterson news will probably ramp up this week, and like clockwork his name will be attached to the Cowboys. It’s unlikely the Vikings will just release Peterson, but rather seek draft pick compensation. What would you give up for a 30 year old running back, and he’s not just any normal running back. Would Jerry really consider going after Peterson when the Cowboys have holes that must be addressed on defense? For me, as tempting as it is, this team is a few defensive players from getting deeper into the playoffs. Keep the new found roster philosophy going and build this team through the draft.
What headlines do you expect the Cowboys to make this coming week?
