Southern Miss hasn’t had as good of a season as they hoped, especially with their future NFL draft pick receiver in DeAndre Brown on the outside.
They’ll be matched up against the Louisville Cardinals, who have had a huge rebound season thanks to new head coach and Big East Coach of the Year Charlie Strong and his strong running game.
In a battle of only a hand full of legitimate NFL potential prospects, it’ll be more of a test of where these two programs with two bright young head coaches are headed. Still, however, there will be some talent evaluators watching these games with a close eye.
Southern Miss Golden Eagles vs. Louisville Cardinals – Beef O’Brady Bowl
DeAndre Brown, WR, Southern Miss (JR)
A big-bodied, long striding receiver who has the size/speed combo to be a number one receiver in the NFL, Brown has been dominant at times and relatively forgotten about this season and over his career. He improved his route running a big this year, but regardless of that, his red-zone ability, physical play, and his rare athletic ability will likely make him have his named called in the top three rounds of the draft if he declares.
Bilal Powell, RB, Louisville
Powell wasn’t the starter to begin the year, but early in the year he passed Victor Anderson and became the full time man. He’s had numerous 150+ yard games and is one of the nation’s top rushers. His power through the hole and in the open field has allowed him to gain huge chunks of yardage after first contact, and he’ll need to do it once more if they want to finish the season with a win.
Adam Froman, QB, Louisville
Froman hasn’t had a great, NFL type year this season, and is likely only a camp-arm at best as of now. However, his glimpses of great touch, calmness in the pocket, and mid-range accuracy could at least peek a team or two’s interest. He’ll need to finish the draft scouting season strong, starting off with his final college game here.
Doug Beaumont, WR, Louisville
Beaumont has been injured for much of this season, but his quickness and deep speed in times this year as well as in the past makes him a threat for the Cardinals in this game and for the NFL in the future. He hasn’t developed as a complete receiver and his injuries haven’t helped, but he’ll have a chance to prove he’s a 100 percent in this game.
