Usually the Poinsettia Bowl features a pretty decent match-up, and this year’s battle between two unranked albiet up and coming teams should be intriguing.
Both coaches, Ken Niumatolo at Navy and Brady Hoke at San Diego State, have been linked to more prestigeous coaching jobs across the country as both coaches have their program on the right track.
Although neither team has any depth or elite-status of a NFL prospects, the difference between the passing game of San Diego State and the Option Rushing Attack at Navy should make for a very interesting game.
Navy Midshipmen vs. San Diego State Aztects – Poinsettia Bowl
Vincent Brown, WR, San Diego State
A very smooth athlete who has good speed, length, and strength for a receiver, Brown has been one of the most productive receivers in the country. He runs good routes, has reliable hands, and has really benefited from the Brady Hoke offense installed two seasons ago. He’ll test the Navy defense, as they aren’t used to facing a deep receiver like Brown.
DeMarco Sampson, WR, San Diego State
Sampson improved over the course of the season, and has grown leaps and bounds as a receiver, especially as a route runner. At 6’2, he has the size, and his speed allows him to get down field in a hurry. Questions about his work ethic or toughness won’t be answered in this game, but his improvement on the field must be shown for the final time.
Ricky Dobbs, QB, Navy
Although he’s set to serve as a midshipmen in the Navy after this season and for the next four years, Dobbs is a great athlete who could have a chance at some position in the NFL. He plays quarterback for this team, but despite his improvements as a passer, he’s also the top rusher for his team, and that running skill could give him a shot at the next level, if he pursues it once he finishes his tenure with the Navy.
