2011 NFL Prospect Bowl Game Preview: December 24th

Damaris JohnsonIn college football, it’s never easy traveling to a team’s homefield and trying to defeat them. However, in most years, Hawaii gets that advantage of homefield and gets to play in the post-season for their home crowd.

A win is not going to be easy, though, against one of the best offenses in the country, lead by one of the best non-BCS coaches in Todd Graham. Two deep spread offenses in a likely high scoring game should make for a very exciting Hawaii Bowl.

Hawaii Warriors vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricanes – Hawaii Bowl

Damaris Johnson, WR, Tulsa (JR)
A very elusive, deep receiver, Johnson has been very productive and is one of the Tulsa all time great receivers despite only being a junior. While I doubt he’d declare for the draft, which would be a mistake in my opinion, his great speed, reliable hands, and versatility in his routes will cause headaches for Hawaii defensive backs as well as NFLers in the future.

Trae Johnson, WR, Tulsa
Johnson doesn’t have the greatest routes and overall mechanics, but he’s quick in the open field and has done a great job in finding openings in the defense his whole career. Not a flashy receiver, Johnson has been one of the most productive in the country over his career, and he’ll likely try and end his time at Tulsa with yet another big game.

Charles Clay, FB, Tulsa
One of the best fullbacks in the country, Clay is as complete as you’ll find in a fullback. He’s got very reliable hands, catches away from his body, and runs routes well out of the backfield. He’s got good enough size at 6’4 to possible play an H-Back or tight end in the pros. He blocks fairly well, though it’s not his strong suit, and moves rather fluidly for a fullback. He is a draftable fullback, which has been rare over the years.

Greg Salas, WR, Hawaii
A perfect fit both athletically and technique-wise for this Warriors temm, Salas has been able to showcase his moves after the catch and route running in this high powered spread offense. No one on this Tulsa team can really stick with him for the whole game, and because he runs routes well, explodes when the ball is in the air, and has very reliable hands, it’s going to be tough for teams to pass on his past the 5th round.
Lametrius Davis, CB, Hawaii
As you can tell by the Tulsa receivers, Davis will be having his hands full covering two of the more productive receivers in the country. He has good change of direction and great ball awarness, but can get deep at times if he hesitates too much, and really struggles moving across the whole formation. He’ll need to prove he can hang with the Johnson’s across the formation if he hopes to slow them down and impress NFL scouts.
