2011 NFL Draft Prospect Bowl Game Preview: December 26th

TY HiltonOn a football Sunday that should dominate the headlines today because of the playoff ramifications, we still have a bowl game today, albiet one that shouldn’t be viewed higher than any part of the NFL game.

Still, Florida International was a surprise team to make a bowl game, while Toledo played just well enough in the MAC  to make the post-season.

Florida International Golden Panthers vs. Toledo Rockets – Little Caesars Pizza Bowl

TY Hilton, WR, Florida International (JR)
While I think most scouts and his coaches hope he doesn’t declare for the draft, he will be the most talented player on the field for this game thanks to his extremely quick feet and moves, his deep speed, and his ability to contribute in a multitude of ways. Hilton would only be a 5th-6th round pick if he declares and can use another year to get bigger and develop more as a receiver, but he should give the Rockets headaches in this one.

Anthony Gaitor, CB, Florida International
A very physical, hard hitting cornerback, he isn’t a great fit for the position at the next level, he fits very well in this run protecting, instinct-driven defense that the Golden Panthers run. He can turn and run as well as come up in a hurry in run support and can deliver the big hit, but he’ll need to prove he can hang deep in coverage if he hopes to make a good impression for the next level.

Kevin Kowalski, C, Toledo
One of the better centers in the MAC, Kowalski handles the blitz well for a center and can get to the second level in the run game. He struggles with bigger nose tackles and in space, which is two things the Golden Panthers will try to employee with bigger nose tackles and a willingness to blitz multiple guys in space against Kowalski.

Greg Ellingson, WR, Florida International
The number one receiver in terms of offensive gameplan, he really complements the more productive Hilton well in this offense. He has fairly reliable hands, good body cntrol and deceptive speed that can get him vertical in a hurry with the ball. He doesn’t have elite athletic ability, but he’s consistent enough to get an NFL shot.

Archie Donald, ILB, Toledo
While Donald has the size and bulk for a next level linebacker starter, he doesn’t have the speed, range, or consistent instincts in the passing game to be a starter in the NFL in the future. However, his size, role in the defense, and consistent tackling should make him productive against the Golden Panthers in this game, and could be his last chance to impress for possible NFL and likely lower leagues.
