Small School Notebook: October 31st

Casey TherriaultAnother week in the books at the small school level, and another set of scouting notes from the weekend. This week, the MEAC dominates our scouting notes, mostly thanks to the work of Damond Talbot (@drockstheparty on twitter). The scouting features two players that we have written “Diamond in the Rough” Articles for, as both Casey Therriault of Jackson State and Adrian Hamilton of Prairie View A&M are both features in these notes.

Also, some D2 scouting by our scout Trey Randall for Humbolt State and a host of other small school prospects scouted and broken-down for you.

Bethune Cookman
-Jackie Wilson – QB – He was very productive, both running and throwing the ball this week. He was able to show his skills at running the ball. While he didn’t put up huge stats, Jackie was able to complete 12-15 passes for 183 yards.  He was very good at hitting the open receiver and was a great game manager.  Did a very good job and ran for over a 100 yards.

Isidore Jackson – RB – He is a big back, that runs with great intensity. He will put his head down and blast a Linebacker.  He has good moves, and is a great North and South Runner. He makes one move and puts on his burners. He is not the fastest guy but has good football speed. He reminds me of a Fred Jackson a very tough runner.

Alex Monroe – OT – He was dominating the edge rusher all game. He has great strength and speed. He is not the fastest guy, but his first step is amazing. He has great hands, and is the line leader for the Wildcats. He is very physical and plays well.

Anthony Woodard – DE –The junior Defensive End was very productive, he was in the backfield a ton, was able to have two nice sacks on North Carolina Central QB. Has a good first step, and was playing very good. He is a long armed player who has good inside moves. He is still raw on the rip move, but was getting better as the game went on.

Jean Fanor – SS – This kid was a force on the field, he was a very hard hitter and was all over the field.  He had a very nice interception and caused a nice fumble as well. He is a good tackler and is a good cover safety. He showed great hands on his interceptions and was able to make great plays against the run.

North Carolina Central
Brandon Outlaw – LB –He was the only player that showed up for the NCC defense. He was all over the place, and was causing havoc for the running game. He was able to get great penetration and was disruptive when covering as well. He finished the games with 11 tackles and was very good. He showed why he is the leader of the defense.

Geovonie Irvine – WR/PR – He was very productive as a WR and as a Punt returner. He has good quick moves, looks like a cheap mans Devin Hester. He will have to play slot receiver if he made it to the next level, but could be a very helpful player on Special Teams. He has a very good first step, and his routes are a bit sloppy.

Jackson State
-Casey Therriault – QB – A highlight reel this week against the Prairie View Defense. He lit them up, and really tried to send a message to the SWAC division. He had a come out party against he A&M defense. He threw for 398 yards and ran for another 56 yards. He had a total of 6 touchdowns and looked like a man among boys out of the football field. He has it all, great intangibles and is a great QB. He has a good drop and delivers the ball so smoothly.

Marcell Wilder – WR – He is the main target for Therriault and you can tell they are on the same page. Wilder has a great understanding with his QB. He is able to read the defense very well and post up in the middle of the field. He broke a hundred yards through the air and showed his speed on a few of his receptions. He is very comfortable out on the field and is able to break out of hard tackles.

Joseph Lebeau – DE – The mean defensive end from New Orleans, was in the backfield the entire game. He was able to come up with 1.5 sacks, and was a very vocal player for the defense. He is a smart kid, and contains the edge well.  He is a very smart player, is good on the screen pass and is a good edge rusher.  He is does a great job and getting up field and continues to play big.

Prairie View A&M
Adrian Hamilton – DE –  He was a force still, he was chasing the mobile Therriault all over the backfield, but was able to get 2 more sacks to his total, putting him at 16 on the year. He is becoming a force in the middle and will be a great player. At 6’3 he knows how to move his body and was able to use his speed to catch JSU’s QB twice for 21 yards in loss.

Spencer Nelson – WR – This kid is fast, he was able to get behind the JSU Corners on more than one occasion, but had a huge play where he caught a bomb from PVAMU’s QB.  He had an awesome catch over the defender and took it for 77 yards to the house.

Alabama State
Kaderius Lacey – RB – This kid was amazing, there was no passing game for AAMU so they had to rely on Lacey. Lacey didn’t let them down, this was called the Magic City Classic, and Lacey was the Magic. He was everywhere and couldn’t be stopped by the Alabama State defense. He rushed for 192 yards and accounted for one of the AAMU touchdowns. He is a good back, he is quick and hits the hole very quick. Hard to tackle, and uses his moves to get extra yards.

Corey Hart – DE – This kid has been pretty amazing, and was great in the game. He has a very strong first move, he has good hands, and was amazing at getting off the blocks. He hit the QB numerous times, and was in the backfield a ton.  He ended the game with 3 tackles for loss and 2 massive sacks on Dominguez.

Alabama State
Devin Dominguez – QB – Dominguez was trying to single handedly carry the ASU team for the win, but he came up short. He ran in the 59 yard touchdown near the end of the game, bringing back his team, but when the extra point was blocked, the wind was took out of the ASU team.

Nick Andrews – WR – He was very good at getting open, he is a good possession receiver. He has good hands and Is able to get open on slant routes. He needs to work on his out patterns but does a good job off the blocks. He is the main target and accounted for more than half the yards of the ASU receiving.

Bobby Wenzig – K – You cannot blame him and say he didn’t show up, because he was hitting his kicks. After missing a long 46 yarder in the 1st quarter, he went on to hit 2 40 plus yard kicks and was keeping his team in the game. He did have an extra point blocked as well as a field goal being blocked. They were both good holds but the line just didn’t hold up. Plus Wenzig had 3 punts averaging 51 yards a punt.

Humboldt State University Lumberjacks
Running back Lyndon Rowell had a mediocre performance.  He rotated with the back up running back throughout the game.  Rowell continued to show his ability to catch the ball out the backfield but his offensive line really struggled to sustain blocks.
