Let’s go Bucs!

It doesn’t involve the Steelers, but tomorrow is a big day for PIttsburgh sports — the Pirates opening day. The Pirates are pretty much a punchline at this point to a lot of people, but there are plenty of real baseball fans in the city who watch and follow the team, including several members of the staff here at Blitzburgh Blog. 

Baseball has been my favorite sport since I was in grade school and I was a STH for the Pirates last season so the losing certainly hasn’t scared me away. I get giddy for opening day just like I do for the Steelers first game in the fall.

I don’t know when it will be, but sometime in the future the Pittsburgh Pirates will be a very good baseball team and everybody who has vowed never to support them or who has sworn off Major League Baseball will be filling up PNC Park.

That is why I watch, no matter how long the the losing continues. Losing streaks like the Pirates are going through are good for fans. They make you appreciate the good times. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I was more excited for Pedro Alvarez’s first walkoff home run than any Yankees fan was for making the playoffs. That one moment was worth a summer of (mostly) terrible games. Just listen to Greg Brown and Steve Blass. There are probably 20-25 MLB announcing duos who wouldn’t get that excited over a walkoff home run in Game 7 of the World Series.
