Dolphins Camp Report: Day 6

With the ratification of the new CBA earlier Thursday evening, Dolfans got their first glimpse of Reggie Bush, Kevin Burnett, JasonTrusnik, Marc Colombo, and Matt Moore in aqua and orange. Unfortunately, the fans were forced to observe from afar, as the Dolphins continue to hold a large portion of their workouts on the far field at the facility in Davie.

Not only are the fans missing out to a degree, but the media hasn’t been able to cover practice to the extent they had in the past. Nevertheless, they’ve been trying to update us with all the happenings to the best of their ability and we’ll continue to try to roundup all the information we get with these camp reports.

Chad Henne has best practice of camp
The crowd let it be known they were behind their starting quarterback with “Let’s go Henne” chants. By all reports, Henne didn’t disappoint, coming through with his most consistent session of training camp. Not many details were made known, but all of the Dolphins’ beat writers had positive things to say. Well, except for Omar Kelly, who hinted that Henne isn’t throwing Brandon Marshall’s way enough.

As for Henne’s supposed competition, the only thing we heard regarding Matt Moore was being the victim of Jason Taylor’s first sack of training camp. This is Henne’s team and his job to lose. It’s going to take the wheels completely falling off on Henne or Matt Moore miraculously being reborn as a quarterback for that to change.

Starting O-line takes shape. Will it stick?
Minus left tackle, which Jake Long will obviously man when he’s ready to go, the rest of the starting offensive line is starting to come into focus. Richie Incognito (right guard), Mike Pouncey (center), Vernon Carey (left guard), and Marc Colombo (right tackle) lined up with the first team.

It’s hard to envision that changing much, outside of potentially right tackle, where Lydon Murtha is expected to have a say in the competition. Murtha is currently being plugged in at left tackle in Jake Long’s absence, however, which could hurt his prospects of seriously challenging Colombo.

When Jake Long returns the left tackle spot is instantly solidified. Everywhere else is a question mark, though. Richie Incognito was only average, if not mediocre in 2010, Mike Pouncey is an unproven rookie, Vernon Carey hasn’t played guard since his rookie season, and Marc Colombo was one of the league’s worst starting tackles last year, while Lydon Murtha has been nothing more than backup material in the past. I’m more than a little concerned with the unit, but hey, Tony Sparano couldn’t be off base with is specialty in back-to-back seasons, could he?

Does Reshad Jones have early edge on Chris Clemons?
Chris Clemons is still getting the first-team reps, but Reshad Jones has been making more plays. Clemons obviously has stiffer competition lining up against the starting offense, but if Jones continues to make plays, he’s going to pass up a seemingly stagnant Clemons sooner or later.

While Clemons is faster and arguably the safer option, this Dolphins’ defense needs to create more turnovers to take their game to the next level. Early on at least, it appears Jones is the one that gives the best chance to do so.
