It is officially NFL draft week! Thursday is right around the corner and the Dolphins will soon be finding out which new young talent will be helping this roster hopefully develop into a potential contender. You’ve got the NFL draft, you got the NHL and NBA playoffs…it’s a wonderful time to be a sports fans.
Throughout the offseason we have highlighted and looked into several draft options for the Phins including our three round mock draft post. While we have done a mini deep dive into some of the draft prospects here are the 5 most interesting storylines Dolphins fans should pay attention to for this week’s draft.
1) Who will replace Jake Long?
The Dolphins currently have one of the weakest pairs of starting tackles in the league. Jonathan Martin is a young player who hopefully can develop but currently can’t be trusted to keep Ryan Tannehill healthy.
The Dolphins will most likely go one of 2 directions this week/weekend.
i. Option 1: Trade for KC Chiefs OT Branden Albert. Most likely would accompany compensation of a 2nd round draft pick and a fat contract.
ii. Option 2: Drafting an OT with one of the Phins top 3 picks, even potentially trading up for top draft prospect Eric Fisher.
2) What will the Dolphins do at 12?
There are many different routes the Dolphins can chose here however it is widely believed it is down to 3 potential options. That being said there are endless possibilities:
i. TE Tyler Eifert
ii. WR Tavon Austin
iii. Best DE ( Carradine, Werner, Ansah ) on the board
3) What will the Dolphins do with the running back position?
Are they satisfied enough with Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas? Buzz was created earlier this offseason that the front office doesn’t really trust Daniel Thomas but who really knows. I would keep my eyes open with one of the Dolphins two 3rd round picks as there are several backs that might fall into the Dolphins lap.
4) When do the Dolphins address their need at CB?
There is plenty of debate out there on when the Dolphins should be looking for a CB. Many people believe they should be waiting until the later rounds while others are demanding to trade up for Dee Milliner. Desmond Trufant is another player who has caught the eyes of many.
5) Are the Dolphins done at WR?
Stedman Bailey, Terrence Williams, Robert Woods…the list goes on, do the Dolphins feel they have addressed the position enough or are they looking to add even more weapons.
It should certainly be an exciting week.
