When the Dolphins let Reggie Bush walk this off-season it was assumed 2nd year running back Lamar Miller would be given the keys to the running game and put his skill set and quick feet to the test on the field. Miller has had the fan base and fantasy football owners excited by his potential as many has touted him to be the next stud running back in the league. Many assumed that he would be given the bulk load of carries and had the potential for a strong season, Miller himself set a goal of 1,500 yards this season.
Well with all the excitement despite not having a fumbling issue in his prior carries in his rookie year or his time at the U, Miller fumbled his first snap this preseason causing many to think maybe it's time to slow down the hype on the young back. After the HOF game, ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted many around the league have concern over the Dolphins running game
Today, Miami Herald writer Armando Salguero tweeted that the starting running back job is still up for grabs. Most would think that the fact Miller hasn't won the job would be due to struggles with pass protection. The two things that keep young talented backs off the field are pass protection and fumbles.
Lamar Miller has work to do as he clearly still needs to earn the starting job. There is no doubt Miller is the most talented running back on the squad but he still has to prove it before the starting job is just handed to him.
Jonas Gray, coming off a 2 touchdown game, rookie Mike Gillislee and Daniel Thomas all have an opportunity here, it will be interesting to see if any of the backs gain ground on Miller or if Miller finds away to separate himself from the pack.
