The Miami Dolphins will have four representatives in this year's Pro Bowl. Punter Brandon Fields, cornerback Brent Grimes, defensive end Cameron Wake and center Mike Pouncey were all named to the roster.
Fields will be making his first Pro Bowl apperance in this being his seventh season in the league. He ranks near the top of the league in virtually every category for his position including 2nd in punt average, 2nd in net average, and his 74 yard punt in Buffalo is the third longest in the NFL this year.
In his first season with the Dolphins and seventh in the league, Brent Grimes will be making his second Pro Bowl apperance. After suffering a season ending Achillies injury in 2012, Grimes has emerged as Miami's top defensive back and best free agent signing. The 30 year old has recorded 55 tackles, 15 passes defensed, four interceptions and one pick six in 15 games started in 2013.
While Fields and Grimes were both deserving of a Pro Bowl spot based on their stats, the selections of Pouncey and Wake are a bit more surprising. Pouncey is the lone bright spot on the Dolphins offensive line however its hard to justify a lineman from the unit that has allowed the most sacks going to Hawaii. Wake's 8.5 sacks and 19 quarterback hits are an off season for him, although he was dealing with injury in the early stages of the season. Wake will be playing in this third Pro Bowl in five years but he was likely voted in this time based on name recognition.
Even though a Pro Bowl spot is a nice honour for the players, like the game itself, it is meaningless to the team. Let's not forget the Kansas City Chiefs had more Pro Bowl selections than wins last season.
Wins are the only thing that matters in the NFL and the Dolphins will need one on Sunday if they want any chance of making the playoffs.
