The Miami Dolphins announced that they have parted ways with General Manager Jeff Ireland after six seasons.
According to Jeff Darlington of NFL Network, Jeff Ireland was "going to be stripped of ultimate power if he remained with the team." Both parties agreed that parting ways was in everyone's best interests.
With offensive co-ordinator Mike Sherman being relieved of his duties Monday and Ireland being let go today, it leaves head coach Joe Philbin in an awkward position. His job appeared to be safe and its unclear whether or not the new GM will have the luxury of choosing his own coach. One of the Dolphins' main issues this year was coaching so they have not solved all their problems yet. However, moving on from Jeff Ireland was a move that had to be made. Luckily owner Steve Ross was able to realize it.
Despite the presence of a coach, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com believes that the Dolphins GM vacancy could be an attractive one. Having a young quarterback in Ryan Tannehill and some talent on the roster to work with is definitely beneficial.
All potential GM options are speculation at this point including the possible promotions of Brian Gaine or Dawn Aponte to the position. A widely discussed name not currently part of the organization has been that of former Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.
