What a difference a season makes. With the scandal and a new season upon the Miami Dolphins, head coach Joe Philbin, GM Dennis Hickey, and owner Stephen Ross have demonstrated a willingness to change the culture in Miami.
Gone are those training camp haircuts for rookies as the clippers seem put away for now. Here to stay is the #StrongerTogether mantra that keeps coming up on every Dolphins fan follower’s Twitter feed.
With the second preseason game on Saturday, the Dolphins seem like a well adapted cohesive unit. You have defensive starters and offensive starters rooting on the rookies and journeymen that make up the bottom half of the Dolphins roster at the end of a preseason game.
Just yesterday, head coach Joe Philbin did something that not a lot of fans see, he showed his heart and soul by accepting the challenge of combatting ALS by being a full-participant in the Ice Bucket Challenge. This example showed the human side of Joe Philbin and most importantly, a human interaction with the players. As his team gathered behind him, supporting him, he accepted the sheer chill of the water as the team cheered and he playfully kicked some of the ice in their direction.
The whole Dolphins team participated by dumping several buckets of ice water on head coach Philbin himself as he responded to the New England Patriots ice bucket challenge. Now it’s up to the Bills and Jets? What do they have in store. This glimpse via social media is the transparency not seen in previous regimes and this is what the fan’s clamor for.
This morning, a familiar face and legendary Hall of Fame quarterback in Dan Marino was up to the challenge and contributed his efforts to the cause by being apart of an ice bucket challenge with owner Stephen Ross. For fans wondering, Marino took the brunt of the shower. Ross looked less soaked.
Finally, while this post screams MiamiDolphins.com positivity, we do know that we see a different team. The cuts will not be popular after the third preseason game and the Dolphins might be tinkering with their roster until the 11th hour on September 6th, but in reality, the fans truly see a team out there fighting to prove the naysayers wrong.
From a fan’s standpoint, the Dolphins opening drive against the Falcons could be a sign of things to come. For us writers, we just hope the sky isn’t falling in Miami this season!
