Here goes nothing! The Miami Dolphins are a favorite amongst a large percentage of NFL fans in Florida and anywhere outside of Florida. Everyone that I know in California likes the 49ers, Raiders and Chargers, but the people I have met are long time and loyal Dolfans.
Being a Dolfan outside of the viewing area as deemed by the FCC as a blackout without a sell out, has allowed me incredible opportunities to watch this team.
I’ve seen some great games from the Marino-era filled with joy and sadness. From everything to Dan Marino leading a comeback in 1994 versus the Jets where he threw 4 TDs to Mark Ingram, one of which was a fake spike. However sadness when Marino fell down in a heap with a torn Achilles in Cleveland the season before.
Happiness with a playoff wins over the Chiefs(’91) and Chargers (’93) and sadness when that nearly same (’93-’94)Chargers team climbed back with the help of a Natrone Means TD (he stepped out of bounds before crossing the plain) and a missed FG (by Pete Stayanovich) after wide receiver Scott Miller drew a pass interference after almost getting beheaded. Believe me, these missed opportunities are replayed in my 36 year old brain every year.
Here’s the thing though, the Miami Dolphins for better or worse are my team. It’s our team and every year we can believe it’s “our time.”
We can sit on Sunday every year and figure that if our math is correct, the Dolphins have to score enough points to win. We count up how many field goals we need, like getting quarters from the couch and running to catch the ice cream man in the street.
Heck, we NEVER see a game where the team dominates. The team always finds ways to keep things close and plays not to lose. Lately it’s seemed that all of the bad news of about the Dolphins last season has leaked into the minds of national NFL media where the Dolphins aren’t even picked to make the playoffs this season. Teams such as Denver, New England, and Kansas City are getting that respect in the AFC. It’s like the Dolphins are non-existent outside of the local papers.
It seems the Dolphins are just the lovable team we thought they were. WE can’t get enough of being able to splash our bodies with some re-tread QB (Culpepper) jersey or even rookies such as Chad Henne and now quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
What’s worse, consideration of getting a jersey is a dilemma that seems to be on repeat like a broken record player. It’s as if the season plays the same exact tune and one that we can’t get out of our collective heads.
Can I spend $299 on a Dolphins jersey without that player being of little impact due to a heaven forbid catastrophic injury? It’s scary to think about the ramifications of purchasing a favorite player’s jersey for fear of being cut or injured.
However, Dolphins fans from afar have plenty of choices. Just look at where everyone is from. It seems that there are more North East Dolphins fans.
Explain an estimated 20,000 at last year’s Dolphins-Jets game. Thanks to Dolfans NYC that was incredible to see all the aqua and orange spill into the lower bowl of Met Life to show those Jets fans whose house it really is. Dolphins have 3 wins in the new stadium!
Or in my own experience of being in Oakland or San Diego, Dolphins fans in full force!
Here’s what we need to all remember, Monday is the day we can question everything the Dolphins do win or lose. Give the team 12 hours to decompress and our fans time to sleep on it.
Monday we can feel like excrement if we lose or feel ecstatic and crave more of this happy place feeling called winning.
On Sunday, I am purposely choosing to watch the game on my phone and on the go so I don’t hurt the TV. Yeah, I’m passionate as any Dolphins fan, don’t want to hurt the big screen!
Go Dolphins, Phins Up, and finally let’s win already!
