Don Shula said what?

Maybe being 85 years of age hasn’t softened the old ball coach.  Don Shula is as legendary as any other coach in his profession, clearly had a bone to pick with the Miami Dolphins rival New England Patriots.

Specifically, Shula was asked about what he thought about the Patriots coach and his response was a little unexpected.

Shula has spent the past 20 seasons saying all the right things.  He’s been more about making a good name for the Miami Dolphins and supporting the team’s efforts through good and bad seasons.

However, this week, when asked about the Patriots and their coach- Bill Belichick, the Hall of Fame coach Shula referred to Belichick as “Beli-cheat” in a conversation with Dave Hyde of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

In reality, this seems like a funny thing, you know to poke fun of Belichick and his alleged spying on teams by video taping their walk throughs.  It’s the same video taping that the Patriots were caught doing versus the Jets and later reprimanded, albeit not as harshly with a slap on the wrist and $500,000 fine.

As far as Coach Shula saying this, it seemed to show a true side of what he really thinks of Belichick’s amazing run as the head coach of the Patriots where he’s missed the playoffs twice and led the Patriots to 14 division titles, won three Super Bowls, and has had arguably the best quarterback lead his team.

Shula could care less about all those accolades, because you know Bill Belichick and his coaches allegedly cheated during that title run.

You know who cares? Previous members of the Patriots in the media.  Said Rodney Harrison of Shula’s comments:

“I just think it’s flat-out disrespectful,” Harrison told PFT Live on Friday. “I always have respect for Don Shula. I don’t think that Bill Belichick deserves that.”

The Dolphins, who’ve had a certain amount criticism for their front office maneuvering and ownership wavering, didn’t need this to be a headline.  The Dolphins franchise, didn’t need this interview to get out in public, especially from their best and classy representative of the organization.  Frankly, it’s sad that Coach Shula added more fuel to the fire in acting less than classy.

This is not a good look coming from the Dolphins Hall of Fame legendary coach.
