Boise State Not Complaining About its Bye Week
The bye creates a strange feeling after all the anticipation of waiting for the season to begin, then having to go back on hiatus for another week.
Some members of the team don’t mind a week off, though.
“I think it’s probably beneficial. It gives us a chance to heal up and recover,” said running back Doug Martin, who led the Broncos with 57 rushing yards and scored a touchdown against Georgia. “Never complain about a bye week,” he added with a chuckle.
While some may contend that having a later bye is more of an advantage since the soreness, nicks, and bumps can accumulate as the season advances and the break is more favorable, the players make the best of the situation, especially because it’s not something they can control.
“I think it’s good for us,” said wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker. “We get to come home, get back to work a little bit, correct our mistakes we had in the first game, and really prepare for Toledo.”
Shoemaker caught a touchdown pass and was one of nine different recipients of a Kellen Moore completion. Moore earned the Mountain West Conference offensive player of the week award for his 28-for-34, 261-yard performance Saturday with three touchdowns and one interception.
Defensively, lineman Shea McClellin stood out by leading BSU with 2.5 sacks and six tackles against Georgia, and he agrees with Shoemaker about sharpening the proverbial axe this week.
“I think the bye week is good. We get to prepare a little more and work on the things we have to get better at,” McClellin said.
Perhaps it will serve as an additional week to shake off whatever rust remains and advance towards midseason form. According to linebacker J.C. Percy, the coaching staff is preaching the basics during practice.
“Whenever we get extra practices, Coach Pete goes right back to the fundamentals-a lot of special teams stuff, working on one-on-ones,” Percy said.
So what do the Bronco’s do with all their free time this week?
Some good wholesome fun.
Defense for No. 4 Boise State picks up where last year’s stingy bunch left off
By Associated Press
No. 4 Broncos overpowered Georgia’s offensive line and bottled up the rest of the offense en route to a 35-21 victory in a noisy Georgia Dome.
The defense notched six sacks, held talented freshman tailback Isaiah Crowell to 60 yards and disrupted Georgia’s offense all game with relentless pressure up front. And a momentum-shifting interception by Jerrell Gavins put Kellen Moore and the offense in position for a quick score and a 21-7 lead at the half.
It was an impressive performance for a unit missing four key players who graduated and the services of starting senior safety Cedric Febis, one of three Broncos born in the Netherlands who are still trying to clear NCAA eligibility.
