Snaps II: Finally, a favor for Boise State
• No. 12 South Carolina 45, Georgia 42: The Bulldogs and Gamecocks seem constitutionally incapable of playing a normal football game when occupying the same stretch of green. An expected Carolina cakewalk turned into a shootout in bucolic Athens, but a potent combination of on-field trickery and turnover margin ultimately gave the Gamecocks the edge. South Carolina scored 21 points off turnovers to Georgia’s three, and made highlight reels coast-to-coast with a fake punt that culminated in a 68-yard touchdown run by a 276-pound defensive lineman. From Carolina’s own 32.You read that correctly.
The SEC East youth movement made a strong showing, with the Gamecocks’ Jadeveon Clowney recording his first career sack (and his second). Opposite Clowney’s marauding limbs, Georgia’s Isaiah Crowell rushed for 117 yards on 16 carries and his first career touchdown.
That touchdown, by the way, came right in the middle of a fourth quarter that saw 39 points added to the scoreboard, including three touchdowns within the span of a minute. Have a paper bag handy when you read the box score.
Perhaps the most surprising twist of the evening involved Steve Spurrier not benching Stephen Garcia after two interceptions. Garcia was his vintage self, with a shoddy completion rate but results when they were called for. He also managed to hand the ball to Marcus Lattimore 27 times for 176 yards, which is always helpful.
Heading into Week 3 and staring down two very winnable games against Coastal Carolina and Ole Miss, glaring questions about Todd Grantham’s Bulldogs defense remain. But hearken back to last week, and ask yourself: Just how good is Boise’s defense looking about now? Finally, a favor for the Broncos.
Q&A with Boise State interim Athletic Director Curt Apsey

“We decided that for us to have a successful search and to attract the best candidates possible,” Apsey said, “it was better for us to let people out there know that are interested in the job that there is not an internal candidate.
Are you in charge of the football schedule, or Kustra?
“It was the AD’s responsibility before and as far as I know it’s going to stay that way. The good thing about our schedule over the next two or three years is there’s not a lot of holes in it. We’re working on a couple things and I’ll certainly run that by (Kustra). But, no — that’ll be up to me.”
Will you fill the schedule the same way Bleymaier did?
“You can’t argue with its success. People have different opinions on who you should and who you shouldn’t play, but I think Gene’s done a tremendous job in that area and I think that’s a big reason why we’ve been successful.”
Has there been any backlash to Bleymaier’s firing in fundraising?
“I think this community cares about our ability to be successful as much as we do. This community has played a major role in our success for a long time. And the people that I’ve run across have given me no inclination that they’re going to stop supporting us. … If there’s real upset people about the change in terms of fundraising, I haven’t run across many.”
Petersen awaits word on No. 4 Boise’s Dutch trio
“We don’t have any new news for the Amsterdam kids, we’re hoping we’ll know something soon,” Petersen said while opening his weekly news conference. “I’m like you guys, I check every day.
“I know we’re going to know more (this week).”
“These guys are crushed,” Petersen said. “Cedric’s been here a long time and finally gets his opportunity, and the day before the biggest game of his life, or a couple days, it’s like ‘this isn’t going to happen.’ That’s been really, really hard.
“We’re just trying to be as supportive as we can to these guys and we’re just really hopeful that we get them back.”
Petersen said “they’re looking at everything from A to Z.”
aying the issue was “very much out of left field,” Petersen acknowledged changes in area schools’ rules regarding such transfers, but also had a bit of surprise considering the players have been with the program for at least two years each.
“There was no indication there were any problems at all,” he said. “One of the reasons was also that after Geraldo and Ricky were here, the high schools put a law into effect that they couldn’t come over for one year and play.”
