BYU needs to make a move and quick

I know BYU loves to show their largess in regards to Mormon Nation however remaining an independent is putting their programs in jeopardy.

One doesn’t have to look too far to see where the major problems lay. In a word it’s recruiting, for 2013 BYU has seen a near complete collapse that started to show last year but has raised its ugly head in a massive drop off in the level of talent that BYU has been able to recruit. For 2013 BYU has already garnered 18 commitments which is good until you look at just who these commits are. At the top of their board sits a nice catch a 4 star recruit out of Oregon Brayden Kearsley but after that it drops off pretty dramatically with 4 lower 3 stars 3 two stars and 11 non ranked commits of those still listed as considering BYU are 3 four star recruits with little hope of capturing and 2 three star and 1 two star recruits the rest all unranked recruits. I can hear your wheels a turning with the but, but look what Boise State was able to do with their past recruits.

Here is the rub, at best BYU could figure on 2 more 3 star recruits giving them a grand total 7 with a little help from the 4 stars, but after that at best they will have 4 two stars and the remainder all unranked. The last time Boise State had that few of 3 star and 2 Star recruits was 2008, one can’t count 2010 because we only had 5 scholarships to offer as it was and 3 of those 5 where 3 star recruits. As well the problem isn’t so much where Boise was its where everyone else is going today as compared to BYU. Utah is getting their best recruiting class ever at the same time Boise State is working towards that very same goal. While recruiting alone doesn’t dictate how a team will turn out, as there are plenty of flops across the board. It does lend it’s self towards depth and quality of practice preparation which all have an effect on not only game day readiness but injury substitutes.  The last three years Boise State has seen a great explosion of talent coming to the Blue Turf, at BYU it’s just the opposite. Last year BYU had 14 three star and 1 four star of their 18 signees the rest were transfers or JC and 1 unrated recruits.  In 2011 they had 10 three stars. In 2010 they had 2 four star and 17 3 star recruits.  One should be able to clearly see since announcing their move to become independent recruiting has become that much harder for them. Now with the new playoff alignment it’s going to get even harder add in Boise States move to the Big East and if you’re a northwest player looking to play on the national scene which school is going to be more appealing?

BYU has to make one last attempt to enter the PAC and or the Big 12 neither of which I believe will consider them at this time as they have no need to bring on a primadona who’s already launched their own media network and is demanding broadcast rights. I only mention the steps to inquire of the PAC and Big 12 because that’s the steps the BYU’s board will demand. BYU needs to be told one more time NO! before they come to their sense and start talks with the Big East. BYU’s entire to the Big East is all but a furlong conclusion, it’s their only destiny failure to follow in Boise States footsteps will only see the schools quality schedule in continuous decline, along with its ability to recruit. For Alumni of BYU they must know and surely if not now soon pressure will be brought to bear, as the reality of a total free fall into irrelevance is the future if BYU does not change its course.

BYU would be a catalyst as I have written before to not only further expansion of the west by the Big East, but presenting the western schools the chance to bring all sports on board and solidifying their membership. The ability to have all sports in conference only makes the Big East future that much more stronger and stable. As well it improves these schools ability to recruit in all other sports as well.  BYU could risk it and wait a few years and see if down the road other conferences they would prefer to join might offer a invitation. However in the meantime everyone else around them gets bigger and stronger making them an even more attractive  future member then BYU who is now carrying that Mormon media network around their neck making them a more difficult option for the conferences. The more entrenched BYU becomes to their media network the less likely they will be allowed in. The longer this decreasing quality continues the less worthy they become as a rival. On the flip side a move now to the Big East allows BYU to improve their standing now, as well to be a catalyst in helping to build the first nationwide super conference, this would bring stature to BYU. The ball is now firmly in BYU’s court the question is do they have the humility and guts that Boise State recently displayed or are they more like that spoiled kid in the sand box who doesn’t want to share? The clock is ticking and time is even shorter then they may realize let’s hope BYU a school by the Prophets has the ability to Prophesizes!
