Spartan Nation, a once-proud fan base, has found its pride again under Mark Dantonio. What was a program decimated by John L Smith – somehow now the head coach of Arkansas – has been restored after back-to-back 11-win seasons. With success, expectations are raised and double-digit win seasons no longer are a dream, but a standard for Spartan fans and the team alike.
As both expect great things, the bar has been raised.
MSU fans always have to deal with “big brother” Michigan – a fan base which is in denial that MSU has a good program going again, for the most part. In the mind of Wolverines, MSU should not be on their level at all, but after four consecutive wins – no matter the coach in Ann Arbor – there is a clear-cut truth: there is a very healthy rivalry forming between two solid football programs in the state of Michigan.
The Rose Bowl lives in the minds of Michigan State fans everywhere with the amount of success coming the Spartans way.
The inaugural Big Ten Championship Game was a rough loss for MSU, but for the second year in a row, fans saw success and the players continued to strive after it. The Rose Bowl is the goal for this year’s team, and for the third year in a row, seems to be a decent possibility.
As Boise State comes to Michigan State, it provides that test, and a challenge to continue the two-year home winning streak at Spartan Stadium.
East Lansing primer
East Lansing is your standard college town – just on steroids. The campus is very, very large – as is the student body. The city itself is built around the campus, mostly to the north.
For good food and the main part of the town itself, Grand River Avenue is all you need to know. It is the main drag of East Lansing and has seemingly every restaurant imaginable to man.
If you are going to be in town for a couple days, Grand River is a good place to spend time. For good local choices, Crunchy’s has stellar burgers, pizza and a solid beer menu with great Michigan brews on it. Menna’s Joint is a standard among the students – they basically make a burrito of anything from chicken tenders to breakfast food. Jersey Giant is the local sub sandwich place and has been a staple of the Lansing area for some time. The Peanut Barrel sits right in the middle of all the action on Grand River and has a nice patio area, while Five Guys is the Midwest’s attempt at In-N-Out.
To tailgate, I would recommend visiting fans generally avoid the Wilson tennis courts (southwest of the stadium), which is the hotbed of student tailgating and is where you will encounter “those fans.” Munn Field is an alcohol-free tailgate area, if that is more your forte. Otherwise, campus is filled with tailgate lots literally everywhere.
For any tailgating needs you might have, visit one of many Quality Dairy locations, where you can pick up beer, snacks and anything in between.
