I’m sure many of you those three words strung together like that you thought you would never see, but I’m convinced after review everything in regards to last night’s Boise State scrimmage Joe is the QB and Patti is going to red shirt so when I stated earlier someone would be leaving this year I was wrong Boise STate will be carrying 4 QB’s into 2012.
To give you the break down according to eyewitness reports, Joe Started got all the first half reps and did a fine job. Southwick went 16 of 24, 141 yards 1 TD and 1 int against the #1 Defense. All things considered if he doubles those numbers we beat Sparty handily and I say this because well everyone got to see in Bronco Stadium the new beast on the team in Jay AjayI, Ajayi was all Muscle and hammer going 78 yards on 7 carries and a TD. Add in D.J. Harper and Shane Rhoads whom I believe these three guys will be our ground assault super stars across the board each is sure to add a TD giving us 35 points before any field goals of which I’m confident we can achieve 80% with.
Why am I so confident we could overcome 2 Joe int’s against Sparty? Well some of that might to the fact that last night the D had a combined 6 picks and only allowed 3 TD’s for the entire scrimmage. 3 of those ints came against poor Grant Hedrick who could not have asked for a worse showing in front of Bronco Nation, that being said I know he will recover and find himself on the field but let’s just all hope and pray they never left him throw the ball.
Jimmy Laughrea didn’t get his chance in the second half though he did go 1-4 with 75 yard TD and int, but on his first chance in the second half with the red Jersey removed because he was now playing with the starting O got drilled on his first passing attempt and had to be helped off the field. Word is he is fine but they were not going to take any chances putting him back out there. I should also add here Grant did have a TD pass to Shane Rhoads however it was just a screen pass that went for a 55 yard TD but unfortunately Shane did a Pettis leap into the end zone there by nullifying the TD.
Shane Rhoads and Darrian Thompson shined and by all accounts Darian put on a defensive clinic. The Red Shirt freshmen would appear to be a future DB star leading the D with two int’s and 7 solo tackles. While J.D made a brief appearance and Bacon and Mr. Miller didn’t even suit up none of this was due to any kind of injuries just the fact that the coaches have no need to see more from these guy so why risk injury, they know they are studs as we do as well.
Depth at RB seem to be deep and while there is nothing about Drew Write this doesn’t mean the local walk on has fallen far from the #2 spot if at all but certainly we all learned last night the future is very very bright in the Boise State back field not only was Jay carrying Defenders down field , Jack Fields and Devan Demas didn’t shy away from heavy contact and put up good numbers as well Fields had 51 yards on 10 carries while Demas had 24 yards with 4 carries.
I don’t know the total number of field goals kick but I do know none were missed except the last (oh the Irony) a 36 yard by Goodale.
The D across the board behaved like all past Boise State D’s in champ scrimmage they basically dominated and from all accounts looked impressive at every level.
Oh yeah Nick Patti well let’s just say this he’ll be red shirting this year just as Kellen did before him, and his most impressive throw was one in which he over threw Boldenwijn on a deep ball something no one has ever done so the kids got arm strength but he went 1-10 for 40 yards with an int and didn’t see the field in the second half, one other player to note Mitch Burroughs had 7 catches for 70 yards and 1 TD.
As for Coach Pete declaring Joe the starter after the scrimmage well he would do it when ask saying he still not ready to make that call. Whatever is happening in those closed practices most seem to believe coach has it set up right now as Joe then Grant but with Grant blowing up in the scrimmage he’s still not ready to toss in the towel and declare Joe the starter.
