Trying to read into the tea leaves of Boise State.

Last week I watched the presser by Bob Davie head coach of New Mexico, Davie is a very competent coach. Listening to him talk about the triple option and his process of getting started at New Mexico I thought to myself Oh No! And sure enough by week 5 Mr. Davie had his triple option ready for the boys of Boise State. At the same time Boise State’s offense had taken a dumbing by the fan base and media alike and Coach Pete kept telling all who would listen that this week we would be talking about the defense.

If there is one thing Bronco Nation can agree on it’s this Coach Pete is a Genus, the master of persuasion, the student of Sun Tzu art of war. While I cannot speak from firsthand accounts, I can speak to the constant twitter postings and attempt to put two and two together.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. “

Now Will wasn’t the only one saying these things and because I was unable to watch the game myself I can only go by what others are telling me.

So you have a OC and a QB under lots of outside pressure and you want to distract that pressure to buy yourself some time to fix and heal up . New Mexico road game is the perfect place to do this would it not?

“All men can see these tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved. “

Coach Pete doesn’t care about AP polls or even Coaches polls he cares about wins! But there is one other thing I’ve come to realize about coach Pete, he does seem to care even more about people, from the young men he takes into his program to those around him and beyond.  I cannot help but believe that coach Pete went into yesterday’s game with multiple goals. 1. Get the outside pressure off his OC and QB. 2. Get some real time game experience for some of his bench defensives guys it’s a long season and we are not even half way through it yet. 3. Toss a bone to a very good coach trying to bring a program up from the ashes. I for one do not see this as much of a stretch to believe. New Mexico was a live scrimmage a very good scrimmage at that and add to it, 99.9% of the rest of America could not see that scrimmage, left a ton of cover to pull it off. A win is a win whether it be by 30 points or 1, and frankly even though I could not personally watch the game nor listen to it there is one thing we must all admit these games have been exciting! No doubt for years Bronco Nation has been laying the wood to teams and certainly there will be teams next year in the BE we will be laying wood too as well but not nearly as many.

Look for Boise State to take the same track all the other schools will be taking come the end of the non-playoff BCS years . Could Coach Pete not only be preparing his team for the closer games of the future but Bronco Nation as well, could he really be looking that far ahead?

“The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought. The general who loses makes but few calculations beforehand. “

Coach Pete has turned down some very good offers and could easily be one of the highest paid coaches today and many of those moves might have reacquainted him with some of his best passed coaches who had departed to the bigger conference schools, but he didn’t.  While every new job brings exciting challenges, in college football every new class does the same.

“Confront them with annihilation, and they will then survive; plunge them into a deadly situation, and they will then live. When people fall into danger, they are then able to strive for victory.”

When I look at this young crop of Bronco’s making their way to the field I cannot help but get excited and the fact there are so many more of them waiting in the wings for their chance to shine, my expectations only grow. From Ajayi to Shane Williams-Rhodes and all those redshirts building behind the scenes, waiting to break out next year. I’ve got to believe Coach Pete knows the future is very bright, but also knows the challenges week in week out will be much greater than in the past and while he struggles through to get the wins and have this 2012 team leave it’s make on Bronco Nation history he’s planning for the new battle grounds to come next season and laying the foundation for all of Bronco Nation to succeed at the same high level.

“The opportunity to secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.”

Coach Pete needs Bronco Nation as much as Bronco Nation needs Coach Pete as was evidenced by the BYU game. While being critical is holey acceptable and leaders do need to be held account by being asked questions, it should be noted one of the greatest tools Boise State has used against its opponents has been a total lack of information and a united front of the fan base. A line must be drawn between being critical and being damaging. Calling for the removal of players calling for the firing of coaches, that is something scUM fans and media does not Bronco Nation. And while Cripe and Murphy do the best job they can they must  know the wall of resistance they have meet by Boise State has made them some of the best sports writers I know of. This became even clearer to me leading up to the MSU game when I found myself reading a new article in the Detroit Free press. Upon finishing the piece I couldn’t help but think, man did the freep finally hire a real sports writer as it was by far the best written piece I had read in that paper in years so I looked up to see who had written it only to discover it was Murphy! Boise State is spoiled in many ways, a Great Coach, Great City, Great Fan base, and Great sports writers. Let’s not lose that in a year when we all need to come together like never before.

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.”

The time of 50 plus point blow outs wins 7 times a year is probably over and that is a good thing, lets revel in the new harder fought battles of the future. I for one remember it wasn’t that long ago when I would stop recording games in the 4th because they were blow outs and certainly fans leaving the stadium mid-way through the 3qt while the rest of the Nation looked on from their TV’s to see a half empty stadium will go with them. Every game is now must see TV and every victory that much more appreciated. It’s not mediocre it’s the level of competition is increasing the challenges are greater and the battles harder fought; this is all a good thing. Growing pains are sure to set in as they have so lets relax, reflect and do what we all know we should do.
