After many years of disappointing losses at RFK Stadium, the tides have finally changed. The New York Red Bulls continued their scoring success by dismantling archrivals DC United 4-0 on Thursday night. A brace by Frenchman Thierry Henry was followed by goals from Joel Lindpere and Juan Agudelo to lift New York over DC.
The starting lineup remained the same for New York, with Coach Hans Backe starting Thierry Henry up top with Luke Rodgers. The night started off when Jan Gunnar Solli sent a beautiful cross into the box that Thierry Henry headed past goalkeeper Bill Hamid for New York’s first goal of the night. Solli and Henry connected again in the 38th minute to double New York’s lead.
In the 76th minute, Estonian Joel Lindpere flew into the box off of a pass from Henry. Once in the box, Lindpere got rid of defender Clyde Simms with ease and beat Bill Hamid for the Red Bulls third goal. New York had no problem dealing with DC’s young backline, but they weren’t finished with DC yet.
Juan Agudelo had come into the game as a substitution for Luke Rodgers and he was looking to take part in the destruction of DC United. He did just that in the 92nd minute when Jan Gunnar Solli crossed the ball into the box yet again, this time to the feet of Agudelo. Agudelo incredibly flipped the ball up to himself and scored off the volley to make it 4-0. The demolition of United was complete.
The only United player who was somewhat of a threat for New York was midfielder Branko Boskovic. Boskovic blasted the ball off of the woodwork from a free kick 30 yards out. The biggest threat to New York coming into this game, Charlie Davies, only saw 60 minutes of the game. After his substitution, New York became the only team so far this year to keep Davies off of the score sheet.
With the win, New York moved into first place in the East with 11 points. DC United remain in 6th with 7 points.
