Rodgers Strikes Again in NY Win

Luke Rodgers struck again for the New York Red Bulls as they took on Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night. Rodgers managed to find the goal off of a Dwayne DeRosario cross into the box. This turned out to be the game winner for New York as it was a low scoring game. The win against Sporting Kansas City was the 3rd consecutive win for New York as they remain in 1st place in the Eastern Conference.

NY beat KC 1-0 Saturday

New York dominated the first half as they took many chances, but only managed to find the back of the net once. Despite missing a penalty kick opportunity early in the game, Rafa Marquez played an important part in the lone goal of the game. Marquez restarted the play off of a surprisingly quick free kick and sent Dwayne DeRosario down the flank. DeRosario crossed it into the box and Rodgers put it past goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.

Contrary to controlling the game in the first half, the Red Bulls spent the second half defending. Two changes for New York seemed to make quite a difference as Teemu Tainio and Luke Rodgers were subbed out. Even though the absences of both were definitely taken advantage of, Kansas City could not manage a goal. Juan Agudelo, who came on for Rodgers, had a number of opportunities to make it 2-0 but he couldn’t seem to connect. Agudelo was the biggest threat to Sporting’s defensive line.

With the loss, Sporting Kansas City remain in last place in the Eastern Conference. The loss was their 3rd consecutive and they have not won since their season opener.
