Today is the second installment of the top 5 teams in MLS as voted on by our staff. This week only six teams received votes and the battle for the top spot was a close one with four teams getting at least one first place vote. Let’s have a look at the top 5 for Week 7.
1. Real Salt Lake – RSL barely held on to the number 1 ranking after losing Saturday in Portland. They received less first place votes than the second place team but were able to edge out an average of 2 thanks to many second place votes. Salt Lake also got two fourth palce votes. They’ll have to rebound from the Champions League disappointment to hold on to number 1.
2. New York Red Bulls – The Red Bulls got 7 first place votes but weren’t able to catch RSL on average partly because they got no second place votes. There other votes were third and fourth place votes. If they continue their hot run they could overtake RSL soon.
3. Los Angeles Galaxy – LA also lost this weekend, 2-1 to Dallas, and fell from second to third in our rankings. They had a first place vote, two fifth place votes, and everything in between. With Becks back from the royal wedding can LA move up to the king’s spot in our rankings?
4. Philadelphia Union – The Union came back from a week off and were able to get another win after going down a man. They also had a first place vote, a fifth place vote, and a little bit of everything else. They were not voted for by one writer. They have a game in hand over New York and sit just one point behind them.
5. Seattle Sounders – After an emotional week the Sounders returned home and got their most convincing win of the season. They were only voted for by a handful of our writers but a third and fourth place vote helped them squeak into the top 5 in front of the only other team to get votes this week. They sit level on points with the “sixth” place team and drew with them this season so it may be a weekly battle for the fifth and final spot in our rankings.
Others receiving votes: Houston Dynamo
