Total-MLS Top 5 – July 19

We’ve reached the time of the season where MLS teams are playing friendlies and competing in the World Football Challenge. Fields are bing criticized and players are getting hurt. The All-Star rosters are out and there is a lot going on in Major League Soccer, including the Total-MLS Top 5. This week our writers again gave have the LA Galaxy in the top spot but they’ve got a team on their heels. The third through fifth spots were seperated by razor thin margins. Let’s take a look at this week’s rankings.

David Beckham

1. Los Angeles Galaxy – The Galaxy got a chance to play with some “big boys” on Saturday as they lost 4-1 to Real Madrid. They return to MLS action this week with just a one point lead in the MLS standings. LA got all but four first place votes, three second place votes and a third.

2. Seattle Sounders – Seattle got a thrilling 4-3 win Saturday and continue to show the league that they are potential title contenders. The Sounders got four first place votes and the rest being seconds and thirds.

3. FC Dallas – Dallas was held to a scoreless draw at home but managed to jump into third. Maybe it helps that their match wasn’t cancelled. Dallas will start Champions League soon and it will be interesting to see how they balance this with their league schedule. FCD got one second place vote to go along with a thirds through fifths.

4. Real Salt Lake – RSL’s match with Vancouver this past weekend was cancelled due to a “waterlogged” pitch. This didn’t go over well in many circles including the RSL players and staff. They’re a resilient bunch so this surely will not impact them going forward. Real Salt Lake got one second place vote, two thirds, and the rest of the votes were fourths and fifths.

5. Philadelphia Union – The Eastern Conference again comes in at number five. The Union are in sole possession of first in the East and they have been impressive as of late. Philly got two second place votes and a range of thirds through fifths from our writers.
