Total-MLS Top 5 – August 2

The playoff races in MLS are heating up and so are the “coveted” spots in the Total-MLS Top 5. The Western Conference remains dominant in our rankings as just one Eastern team makes the Top 5. The third spot was tightly contested with six teams in the mix for third through fifth. Let’s take a look at this week’s rankings.

The Galaxy stay atop our rankings

1. Los Angeles Galaxy – The Galaxy got off to a slow start against Vancouver on Saturday but exploded for four second half goals to cement their place at number one in our rankings. LA got all but one first place vote from our writers.

2. FC Dallas – It was a long week for FCD with travel issues to go along with games in multiple countries. Despite being fatigued, Dallas got another win and continues to show they are a title contender. Dallas got one first place vote and one third place vote with the rest being second place votes.

3. Seattle Sounders – Despite a 3-1 loss in Houston, Seattle remained in the Top 5. Like Dallas, Seattle is also playing a lot of games due to Champions League action so we will see how they hold up. Seattle got a variety of votes from thirds through fifths with one second place vote.

4. Columbus Crew – The new Eastern Conference leaders leap into the rankings at number four.  After beating Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto, the Crew are a team to watch for the remainder of the regular season and into the playoffs. Columbus got one second place vote and the rest of the votes were thirds through fifths.

5. Real Salt Lake – After that home loss to the Crew, RSL hangs on in the Top 5. They still have some games in hand so they will have a lot of games coming up but that gives them a chance to climb the standings. RSL got a range of votes from thirds through fifths from our writers.

Others receiving votes: Colorado Rapids, Sporting Kansas City, Philadelphia Union
