Party Line

In what I have to assume was one of the most awkward party lines ever, it has been reported that both Joe Thornton and DW received calls from Sharks majority owner, Hasso Plattner following their very public spat last week. What was said will never be known, but Thornton and DW are said to have patched things up, at least for the time being. It’s got to be a pretty bug issue (or news story) when the uber boss man calls and tell you to knock that crap off.

Hey look, hockey is a job and you don’t also get along with you coworkers, but you still need to go in a do your job everyday, and that’s what I figure these two are doing. It’s not like they have much choice, either. Joe Thornton isn’t going anywhere. The only realisticl move is to get rid of DW in the off season, and I’m not sure the Sharks really have the insight or momentum required to do that. It’s what they should have done following last year’s playoff debacle, but they chose to stand pat. Oh, and to make a bunch of questionable signings and degrade what was a pretty decent roster. But you know…

There was also this interesting piece on Working the Corners regarding Jeremy Roenick’s feelings on the situation. I know Roenick isn’t a popular figure amongst Sharks fans*, but I found it interesting to note how much he loves Thronton. And as a guy who KNOWS lashing out and not thinking before he speaks, I give a bit ore weight to his comments that Joe Thornton doesn’t do that in the room. Of course, he could be saying all this just to get screen time, so who knows.

*In the interest of full disclosure, I do have a Sharks Roenick jersey and I loved him as a player, HOWEVER, I do not agree with him regarding Patrick Marleau. At all. His jersey has since been retired from my game day rotation, but I don’t regret owning it.
