Let me start by saying that this article is in no way downplaying the travesty that befell Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, Connecticut. This a terrible event and I cannot begin to fathom how the parents that have to bury their own children must feel.
With the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary coupled with the Aurora, Colorado shooting and the Jovan Belcher murder/suicide, many are calling for tougher gun control. Is that really the answer? For a law abiding citizen is a gun a bad thing? Is protecting yourself and your property a bad thing?
If you answered ‘Yes’ to those questions, this article might not be for you.
I have to say unequivocally that tighter gun restrictions are not the way to go. As I think most of us know criminals do not follow the law…..that’s why they are called criminals. Someone who wants to commit a heinous crime will still find a means to acquire a gun or weapon to completed their desired intentions.
“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms…disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one.”
Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson couldn’t have said it any better. Criminals will have greater confidence, knowing more-than-likely you have no weapon because of a gun ban. A gun ban would not have stopped Adam Lanza from committing these horrific crimes.
These laws hurt law-abiding citizens who just want a means to protect their life, family, and property. To disarm them is to encourage violence upon them.
When citizens are allowed to carry, they can help stop travesties like this. Look no farther than the events of October 1, 1997 in Pearl, Mississippi. 16-year-old Luke Woodham killed his mother before going to Pearl High School killing two-girls, including his former girlfriend. As he attempted to flee in his mother’s car and conduct another shooting at Pearl Junior High, he was stopped by assistant principal Joel Myrick who had retrieved his Colt .45 from the glove compartment of his truck.
Imagine if a staff member at Sandy Hook had a gun and was able to stop Adam Lanza before he murdered in six-women and 20 children. I will leave you with a quote from Mr. Myrick about why he had his gun, “I’ve always kept a gun in the truck just in case something like this ever happened.”
