PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins are going to find themselves in a familiar situation: not knowing when their captain will return to the ice.

On Saturday, Penguins center Sidney Crosby was hit by a shot from teammate Brooks Orpik that was deflected by Islander Brad Boyes during the early minutes of the first period during the Pens 2-0 win.

The 92 mph shot hit Crosby on the jaw under the visor and broke his jaw. Crosby underwent major dental and jaw surgery on Saturday, and the Pens have not provided a timetable for his immediate return.

Pens general manager Ray Shero paid a visit to Crosby on Sunday, and according to the team’s website, Crosby seems to be in good spirits.

Shero said that they will continue to evaluate Crosby over the next few days.  Crosby has not had any concussion-like symptoms as of yet, but the Pens are being cautious.

The last time Crosby was out for an extended period of time, he was recovering from recurring concussion symptoms after taking a few hits during the Winter Classic in 2011 and in a game with the Tampa Bay Lightning shortly thereafter.

He missed 61 games over two seasons while recovering from the concussion.  Crosby currently leads the NHL with 56 points.
