Roy Halladay Will Have Surgery On Right Shoulder

ax

Earlier in the week Roy Halladay got placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Philadelphia Phillies due to right shoulder soreness. He got his diagnosis today from Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Halladay will need surgery to repair a partially torn right rotator cuff, frayed labrum and a bone spur. At best he could return in three months. There was something clearly wrong with him as his velocity was down and he struggled to find the strike zone. In seven starts he had a record of 2-4, an era of 8.65 in 34.1 innings pitched, threw one complete game, struck out 35 while walking 17 and is leading the National League in earned runs and hit batsmen.

Taking his turn in the rotation will be Tyler Cloyd who in 2012 went 2-2 with a 4.91 era in six starts for thePhillies in 2012. He’s pitched in Triple A so far this season and has a record of 1-3 with a 5.40 era in six starts and he’s also struck out 32 while walking 12.  Another option for Philadelphia is John Lannan who is currently on the disabled list with a knee injury. Has made three starts in 2013 pitched well in two of those starts before being roughed up by the Cincinnati Reds and lasting 1.2 innings.

The good news about the injury for Halladay is that its arthroscopic surgery and isn’t viewed as career threatening. He said “They don’t need to reattach the rotator cuff, which would require a year and a half and a low chance of pitching again. To me, the fact that it’s an (arthroscopic procedure) is a lot better option, obviously a lot quicker. And at my age, it’s the best thing for me.”

Hopefully he can recover quickly and again showcase that he is one of the better pitchers in Major League Baseball.
