OAKLAND – In perhaps the biggest blockbuster move so far in free agency, the Golden State Warriors would sign free-agent swingman Andre Iguodala to a four-year, $48 million deal.
Golden State, one of the teams mentioned as a potential landing spot for free-agent center Dwight Howard, would sign the former Denver Nuggets small forward after clearing and estimated $24 million in salary cap room in dealing the expiring contracts of Richard Jefferson, Andris Biedrins and Brandon Rush to the Utah Jazz for the Warriors 2014 first round pick and undisclosed additional picks.
In Denver, Iguodala would average 13.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 80 games.
What this means in terms of landing Howard remains unclear, but if Howard were to land in Golden State and join a team that has perhaps one of the most prolific backcourt in the NBA in Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson—if he is not included in a possible sign and trade— and Iguodala, then it would be wise to pencil in the Warriors as one of the chic picks to come out of an always top-heavy Western Conference in 2014.
Multiple media reports have the indecisive Howard’s final choices in order down to the Warriors, Rockets and Lakers, but with Howard, one can never tell
If the Warriors prolific backcourt is kept intact in addition to landing Howard, Iguodala and power forward David Lee, then expect to see and hear a lot more about Golden State for a long time.
