At just 6’2″ and 215 lbs, Cleveland Browns quarterback, Brian Hoyer has been a huge breath of fresh air. In the birthplace of Superman, Hoyer has become a hero of his own winning his first two starts wearing an orange helmet. Just why has Hoyer knocked off two opponents after taking over for the injured Brandon Weeden?
The North Olmsted, OH native has “it”. In the past two games when the Browns needed him most, Hoyer has delivered. So, what exactly is “it”?
“It” is the all the intangibles and moxie to lead men on the football battlefield. “It” is having the ability to get the ball out quick, commanding a huddle, and knowing when your internal clock is up. “It” is not getting down on yourself after throwing three interceptions. “It” is leading two crucial fourth quarter drives in your first two starts for your hometown team and either winning or sealing the game. And finally, “It” is coming to the rescue successfully when the starting quarterback goes down and your team trades away a very important key player, then wins two games (one divisional) and picks up the moral of one entire fan base.
In the Minnesota game on the road, Hoyer engineered the perfect game winning drive with less than a minute left to play in the game. This past Sunday playing the Bengals, with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter and the Browns winning by just four, Hoyer executed another perfect drive. That touchdown to fullback Chris Ogbonnaya put the Browns up by two scores with roughly three minutes remaining in the game.
As the new signal caller, Hoyer is saying (even if they’re funny) and doing all the right things too.
“Last week, with the interceptions, I kind of had that in my mind (Sunday). When you have a defense as good as ours, you just don’t want to screw it up. And getting the call to lead this offense is kind of like getting keys to a Ferrari. You want to drive it fast, but you don’t want to crash it, either.” Hoyer said, after Sunday’s win over the Bengals.
The thing that Browns fans need to remember is the fact that Hoyer has just three career NFL starts. There is not enough body of work to determine if Hoyer can lead the Browns to the promise land. For now, the Browns ride with Hoyer at the helm as Weeden’s days appear to be numbered. It could be a fun and interesting next twelve weeks for the orange-and-brown.
