Brandin Cooks, wide receiver out of Oregon State, displayed NFL speed in the 40 yard dash with the fastest time of 4.30 seconds. Speed is perhaps the most talked about attribute in regards to receivers due to the NFL becoming more of a passing league each year.
Sammy Watkins (4.43 seconds), Odell Beckham Jr. and John Brown (4.34 seconds) also displayed impressive speed.
Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon and Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson both provide evidence that speed is the one attribute that a receiver must have in order to decimate defenses. The ability to break away from defenders will always be a big part of the passing game. That is what receivers like Cook and Beckham Jr. will bring to the N.F.L.
It is obvious that both Cooks and Beckham Jr. dramatically improved their draft stock and will likely change the outcome of the first round of the 2014 NFL draft on May 8th. Cooks and Beckham Jr. are capable of big gains of 15 or more yards on each offensive play as well as extending drives. Any team that is looking for wide receiver will want Cooks or Beckham Jr.
Turtles at running back?
Carlos Hyde was one of the biggest disappointments of the combine. Hyde ran the 40 yard dash with a time of 4.66 and sustained a hamstring injury toward the end of the dash. Ka’Deem Carey, the highly touted runner out of Arizona, ran the 40 yard dash in 4.70 seconds.
Big surprise
Dri Archer, the running back out of Kent State, posted the best time of the 40 yard dash with a time of 4.26 seconds.
Johnny Manziel makes case for the Houston Texans
Manziel really wants to be drafted by Houston with the first pick. He added to his value by posting a time of 4.56 seconds in the 40 yard dash. A quarterback that runs that fast in the 40 yard dash is highly prized. A fast quarterback is more likely to elude tacklers in the backfield and avoid sacks. Houston Texans fans can call Manziel a shrimp if they want but so long as he scrambles, he can avoid the big hits. Coaches in general may have concerns about his durability but they can rest easy now knowing his speed makes up for his small frame.
