Apparently the greatest regular-season team of all time had some serious chemistry issues.
Marreese Speights, formerly of the Golden State Warriors, revealed all about the problem that is Draymond Green in an interview with ESPN The Magazine’s Ethan Sherwood Strauss.
It’s a doozy, folks, including Green’s apparent relentless targeting of Klay Thompson:
Draymond f—ed up practice and s—,” then-Warriors center Marreese Speights says. “Draymond’s a good guy, but I think at the end of the day, it hurt the whole chemistry of the year.” One player in particular, he says, took much of the heat: “Draymond and Klay got into it a lot.”
Given how well the Warriors played last year until the Finals, it’s a wonder more about the issues didn’t come out. Look at this tidbit about a Green outburst, which Strauss notes a security guard was outside the locker room unsure what to do:
Inside the visitors locker room, he’s hollering “I am not a robot!” at Kerr. When Kerr tells him to sit down, Green screams, “Motherf—er, come sit me down!” When he goes after Kerr, his teammates, including Curry and Thompson, step in to stave off disaster.
The problem here is the fact the Warriors not only put up with Green’s behavior, but rallied around him publicly. It’s a form of enablement, and one has to wonder how the team will move forward with such a volatile presence. Heck, one has to wonder how Kevin Durant will deal with the issue—Russell Westbrook is nothing compared to this.
It’s probably unfair to blame all of Golden State’s problems on Green. But his flailing and kicking on the court, his uncensored pictures off it and apparent negative attitude toward his own team paints him as a diva and a problem.
With this now out in the public, it’s going to be quite a long season for Green and the Warriors.
