Brock Osweiler will want to forget his homecoming to Denver.
Facing the Broncos for the first time since signing a $72 million deal with the Houston Texans this past offseason, Osweiler completed 22 of 41 passes for just 131 yards, and the Texans lost by a 27-9 final score.
The NFL has seen very few games in which so many passing attempts produced so few yards.
According to ESPN Stats and Information, Osweiler’s 131 passing yards represent the second fewest in NFL history by a quarterback attempting 40 or more passes in a single game. The only quarterback to do less was Jesse Palmer, who threw for 110 yards on 43 attempts in Week 17 of 2003.
Osweiler averaged 3.2 yards per attempt, the lowest in a game in his career, and the lowest by a quarterback in the NFL this season (minimum 15 attempts).
He also averaged only 6.0 yards per completion, with no receiver averaging more than 10.0 yards per catch. Pro Bowl receiver DeAndre Hopkins caught just five of 12 targets for 36 yards.
According to Pro Football Focus, only nine of Osweiler’s 41 attempts traveled more than 10 yards downfield. He completed just two of those passes for 24 yards.
Osweiler insisted after the game that the performance had nothing to do with his return to Denver.
“I think there was so much that was built up about myself and the Broncos in this game,” Osweiler said, via ESPN. “And at the end of the day, it was the Houston Texans versus the Denver Broncos. We came up here tonight. We did not play a good enough football game to get this job done.”
After seven weeks, Osweiler ranks last in the NFL in yards per attempt (5.7), 30th in passer rating (71.9) and 29th in completion percentage (58.2).
