According to Cardinal’s GM John Mozeliak, Adam Wainwright has suffered a “significant injury.” Mozeliak went on to say according to the NY Daily News, “There’s a problem with the ligament, but it doesn’t look good.” The implication here may be that Wainwright has somehow damaged his UCL, the ligament most crucial to the pitching elbow. Wainwright has served as the Cardinal’s co-ace with Chris Carpenter over the last few years. Last year Wainwright was 20-11 with 213 K’s and a 2.42 ERA, finishing second in Cy Young Award voting. Should the Cardinal’s medical staff suggest ligament replacement surgery (more commonly known as Tommy John Surgery) , he would be sidelined for the entire 2011 season, significantly reducing the Cardinal’s chances of contending in the NL Central. An announcement on his prognosis is forthcoming this afternoon.
