Hinkie’s Secret Plan Revealed

Like Robert Langdon traversing the churches and museums of Western Europe, I’ve been trying to decipher the true meaning behind Sam Hinkie’s master plan for years. Let’s look at the broad timeline since the Sixers GM took the reins of the franchise.

• May of 2013: Sam Hinkie hired by Sixers.
• June of 2013: Sixers trade All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday for Nerlens Noel and a 2014 first-round pick. This move sets the precedent for a 2-year process of bottoming out for draft picks, and, this is important, creating cap space.
• August of 2013: Brett Brown hired as head coach.
• February of 2015: Sixers trade Michael Carter-Williams for a future first-round pick, creating a vacancy at the point guard position.

For years, Sixers fans have wondered what the end game would be. Would Hinkie’s machinations make all the losses and scathing articles by the general media worth it? I’m here to tell you, you will not be disappointed.

Because I’ve cracked the codex.

That’s right, Australian-born, future mayor of Cleveland, and future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer Matthew Dellavedova.

The first big clue was the hiring of Brett Brown, who coached Delly in the 2012 Olympic Games.

As Brown said yesterday in an article by Dei Lynam, “You have to understand where this kid came from,” Brown said. “He is from a rural part of Victoria. I know his hometown well because it is near where my wife was born.”

The conspiracy goes back decades! Brett Brown even devoted his personal life to doing everything possible to understand the psyche of his future point guard. Sam Hinkie knew that with Brown at the helm, the Sixers could unleash the full potential of Dellavedova’s powers. So he’s been clearing the cap space out for years to throw the max deal at Delly and pull him away from a cap-strapped Cavaliers team as a restricted free agent this summer.

You might ask, why didn’t Hinkie just sign Dellavedova before the Cavaliers did back in July of 2013? Well, he knew the Sixers weren’t ready to contend and he needed his future point guard to have gone through the crucible of the NBA Finals and bring that championship-level experience back to Philadelphia. The NBA Illuminati was obviously aware LeBron would head back to the Cavaliers, so Cleveland was the perfect place for Delly to bide his time, maybe learn a thing or two from King James along the way, before ascending to his rightful place as the starting point guard of the Sixers, NBA championship ring firmly in place.
