The globe might be closer to a DeMarcus Cousins trade than it realizes.
While the Sacramento Kings don’t want to give up on this season, reality sounds like it has started to set in—Cousins hits the market in 2018 and the odds he decides to stick with the team seem grim.
It’s why sources told Sporting News’ Sean Deveney current trade rumors seem more realistic than ever:
“I’d say they have three months, tops,” one Western Conference general manager told Sporting News, requesting anonymity because he is not allowed to speak about other teams’ players. “Probably more like a month, or month-and-a-half, because the closer they get to the (February trade) deadline, the less they’re going to get back. If you’re trying to trade him the week of the deadline, it’s going to be tougher.”
The Kings are 4-7 and 10th in the Western Conference. Based on the above, if things don’t pick up before the deadline next year, Boogie could be on his way out of town.
It’s almost silly for the Kings to keep holding on to Cousins. He’s leaving and can go wherever he wants with any superstars he wants. The Kings will never get the return they want because every team in the league knows he’ll hit the open market.
But some return is better than none at all.
For now, this is more smoke around Cousins, which has gently wafted skyward for about five years. Like they say, though, where there’s smoke, there might eventually be fire.
