We have all seen the miraculous turnaround the Cowboys have made under Jason Garrett’s command, and if the team continues on this path, I’d expect Jerry to remove the interim title and make him the new head coach for 2011 and beyond. I don’t think there’s any question, Garrett has changed the culture and its paying off bigtime.
Looking ahead, if Garrett becomes the head coach, I’d expect him to take a look at changing the defense up, and by that I mean two things: Hiring a new defensive coordinator, and/or moving us back to the 4-3. The whole 3-4 vs 4-3 has been an ongoing argument on message boards since Parcells installed the 3-4 in Dallas in 2003.
Since 2003 the Cowboys 3-4 has been considered just good, nothing great, nothing amazing, just your regular run of the mill 3-4. In 2007, we moved the the supposedly more aggressive Phillips 3-4, again, nothing too impressive. Its been ok, you’ll have people throw stats at the argument, but how many times did the defense dominate and wins games. I think a return to the 4-3 could be next on the agenda.
Interestingly enough, Dave Wannstedt was relieved of his collegiate head coaching gig at Pittsburgh. Why is this interesting to me? Dave loves to coach, he’s a really good defensive coordinator, specializing in the 4-3, a proven defensive mind with Super Bowl credentials. In addition to this, while Wannstedt was is Miami, Jason Garrett was one of his assistants. Could Garrett return the favor and bring him on to get our defense in Super Bowl form? Obviously, this is all my own speculation, but its something we should at least look into.
One thing for sure, Pasqualoni is probably out at the end of the season.
