We all saw it, and we all knew what it meant. Late in the 4th quarter with about 2:47 left on the clock the Cowboys were up 16-13, we needed to get some time off the clock, and make some first downs. We then saw Coach Garrett dial-up 3 consecutive runs plays, for minimal yardage. Why? We all know why, and it was clear as day. Garrett didn’t want Romo to put the ball in the air and possibly get us in a hole with a turnover.
Does Garrett trust Romo? I would say yes, but perhaps not so much in crunch time. The Cowboys got too conservative, and failed to take time off the clock; but more importantly, they failed to get a first down. There’s a no win situation here when your Coach Garrett or Tony Romo. If we get conservative its Garrett’s fault, if Romo throws INTs at the end of the game, its his fault. The Cowboys are in a quagmire right now, with Garrett the playcaller and Romo the passer, tied together.
Jerry Jones saw the same thing we all saw, and he commented on it:
“This game was decided right down there at the end, and I am so proud of these players, the way they competed tonight. We rolled the dice at the end and went conservative rather than try to get some points and it bit us.” (SI.com)
So we’ve seen two approaches with the same results – a loss. We let Romo air it out and he single-handedly lost two games and then we try the conservative approach and we lose. So, what can the Cowboys do? The Cowboys need to figure something out and figure it out fast or we could be in for an average season and out of the playoff run.
The Cowboys drop to 2-3, and in 3rd place in the NFC East. No need to panic though, we face the lowly Rams next week at home, that should be a win putting us at 3-3. If we take out the Eagles, we are still very much in the NFC East run, and we’d be 2-0 in the division.
