Week seven in college football had another round of exciting games, and a few close calls for some ranked teams. Look for more of the same this coming Saturday. For now, let’s look at how these guys did last week.
– Kevin Hogan, QB, Stanford 6-4 , 228lbs (redshirt junior)
23/35 284 3 TD 0 INT vs Washington State
Next Opp: @ Arizona State
I was wondering how this game would fare considering the high octane offense of Washington State this year, although they have now won many games. In the end Stanford had nothing to fear and shutdown Halliday and Hogan had a nice bounce-back game. Hogan will be facing tough competition the rest of the year and has a nice opportunity to really put out some good tape for scouts and it’ll begin against Arizona State. ASU is a solid defensive team and will challenge the QB, they like to collapse the pocket from the middle and Hogan will have his hand fulls. I want to see how Hogan handles their defense on the road. This will be a great game to tune-into.
– Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State 6-4, 210lbs (redshirt junior)
19/37 238 3 TD 1 INT vs Purdue
Next Opp: @ Indiana
As I expected, Purdue was not going to rollover and made it a decent game and as a result Cook played the entire game and put up good numbers outside the INT. I expect Cook to just dominate the rest of the season as there aren’t many other really tough challenges upcoming. They have #13 Ohio State coming up, and Maryland will be a decent matchup, but for the most part Cook should be able to put up good game tape for the scouts. The Spartans face Indiana this week and if they jump ahead early, Cook will probably get rested at the half.
– Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State 6-4, 235lbs (redshirt sophomore)
30/36 317 3 TD 0 INT vs Syracuse
Next Opp: Notre Dame
Winston had it relatively easy against Syracuse, and put together a nice game as well. Maybe one his his better games as far as accuracy goes. FSU got the running game going and this definitely helped Winston open up the passing game and he hit multiple players throughout the game. It was a solid performance. This Saturday will probably be Winston’s biggest challenge of the season as they host Notre Dame. Winston is expected to play despite being under heavy scrutiny for his off field issues that may end up costing him the rest of the year. Winston is scheduled to attend a student code of conduct hearing soon, and there’s a good chance he’ll get suspended or expelled from FSU. That being said, if this is Winston’s last game, he’ll want to put up some good tape against a really good Fighting Irish defense. Let’s see how this game goes for Winston, it’ll be a good one.
– Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon 6-5, 218lbs (redshirt junior)
17/27 210 2 TD 0 INT vs UCLA
Next Opp: Washington
The battle against Hundley ended up being a bit disappointing, as I was expecting a closer and more hard fought game. Mariota made it look easy on the road against UCLA and he took their heart. Mariota put in a solid game and a nice win against a pretty good UCLA team. This win will go a long way for the Ducks. They went into a hostile environment and shut the crowd down by putting up 21 points in the first half and they didn’t look back. If Oregon can keep this pace they should win the rest of their games. Stanford will be their biggest hurdle coming up in a few weeks. At this point you have to start to wonder if Mariota is even considering coming out or staying for his senior year. The prospects of playing for the Jets possibly could be dissuading, then again maybe Tampa Bay would be a good fit, but we’ll see, it’s still a bit early.
– Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA 6-3, 223lbs (redshirt junior)
26/37 216 2 TD 1 INT 1 RUSH TD vs Oregon
Next Opp: @ California
Hundley needed to win this big game and so did Mariota. At the end Mariota was the better QB, and thus further solidifying his possible 1st round draft status. Hundley has faced all sorts of adversity this year and he’s stepped up his game, but when you want to position yourself in the draft, then you want to win those “big games” He’ll have more chances the remainder of t the season. California is next and could be a trap game, so UCLA will need to be mindful of that.
– Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor 6-3, 230lbs (redshirt senior)
28/55 510 6 TD 2 INT vs TCU
Next Opp: @ West Virginia
I wasn’t expecting this to be the shootout that it was and it was the first true test for this Baylor team. I really wasn’t thinking that Baylor would win this game even though they were ranked above TCU and they almost lost it; however, Petty was able to pull off the win. Petty was able to move the ball at will for the most part against a good TCU defense. It was an impressive win for Petty and one that he really needed in order to help squash any doubters. Petty will have more brutal challenges coming up. They have West Virginia next, so that’ll be a win.
