Was 2015 Rookie QB Search an Exercise for 2016 Rookie QB?

The Cowboys knew the defense needed to be addressed heavily in the draft. Many, including myself thought the Cowboys would draft a running back at some point, but the Cowboys felt the need to bolster the depth with defensive players that could eventually move into starter roles this season or the next.

During the draft process it came out that the Cowboys were actively meeting with some of the other marquee quarterback names in this draft.

The Cowboys met with the following QBs:

— Bryce Petty
— Brett Hundley
— Sean Mannion
— Garrett Grayson
— Chris Bonner
— Hutson Mason

The Cowboys have not looked at QBs this closely in a very long time, perhaps since they drafted Troy Aikman and Steve Walsh in 1989. The most recent QB the Cowboys used a draft pick on was Stephen McGee in 2009 in the 4th round. In, 2001 Quincy Carter, and Bill Musgrave in 1996. Those 5 QBs are all the QBs the Cowboys have drafted since Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989.

To me, the Cowboys know they needed to get back into the saddle per se and get their feet wet in evaluating marquee name QBs. It has been so long that the Cowboys needed to do their practice in interviewing QBs, and looking at their tape closer. After the Cowboys finished the 2015 draft, this was more confirmation that this was all an exercise to prep them for future draft classes, perhaps for the 2016 draft.

We don’t want to over look Dustin Vaughan, as he’ll make a legitimate push for the #2 QB. But the Cowboys also know that they are playing on borrowed time with Tony Romo, he has about two more years max. We all know Weeden is not the guy and if we need some extended play this team will be in serious trouble.

That being said, the Cowboys are probably more likely to draft a QB in 2016 than they were this year, unless we see a significant jump from Dustin Vaughan this year.

Who are some college QBs to keep an eye on for their 2015 season?

— Connor Cook, Michigan State
— Christian Hackenberg, Penn State
— Kevin Hogan, Stanford
— Cody Kessler, USC
— Jonathan Goff, California

What do you think, will the Cowboys draft a QB next year or could Dustin Vaughan be the heir apparent?
