At 2-7 Cowboys Have Hit Rock Bottom

--Luck audible TEN Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Cowboys are where I thought they would be after I saw the Cowboys struggle with Brandon Weeden and again with Matt Cassel. 2-7 is exactly where I had the Cowboys with Tony Romo out with injury:

We really don’t need to project anymore games while Romo is out, because we aren’t good enough in any phase of the game to win and we won’t win. No sense it getting so upset to the point of getting a headache or ruining your Sunday. We’ll be 2-7 by the time Romo returns. On top of that, we still have some extremely difficult games to close the season.

6-10 is a real possibility, that’s the type of football we’ve been putting on tape. (more)

That was two weeks ago, and it has now come to fruition. I’ll be quite honest, as I was watching the game unfold, it had all the ear marks of another heartbreaking loss. I found myself not getting upset, but rather just hopeless and unsurprised by the defense and offensive struggles that led to another loss. It’s literally been the same sub-standard football for seven straight weeks. We’ve seen how inept the offense has been and we’ve seen how bad the defense has been this year.

Romo is not going to resurrect the season from the dead, and I strongly suspect the team may now be fighting off some malignant losing attitude the rest of the season. We’ll know next week if that will ring true once Romo starts next week against a tougher than expected Miami Dolphins team.

Just last week, I figured the Cowboys would go 4-4 over the final eight games, but today’s loss has me wondering if we can win another game with or without Romo.

Could the 7 straight losses just be the fact that the teacher (Romo) has been out and the substitute teacher (Weeden, Cassel) have not gotten A-games from the rest of the team. When you were in school, we all knew when we had a substitute teacher that nothing would get done, and this is the closest thing I can compare the team to right now. Question will be whether or not the return of Romo will get everyone back in-line or will the students continue with their bad ways?

Quick thoughts and Notes:

— If the season ended today the Cowboys would own the #5 draft pick in the 2016 draft.

— 1-tech needs to get upgraded in free agency with a solid player or a drafted player in the early rounds

— Safety needs to be upgraded; Wilcox can’t tackle, Church is inconsistent

— Claiborne had done a solid job until today and he looked really bad today

— The transition from the 3-4 to 4-3 has proven to be more of a challenge than previously believed. We still look bad, we still look like we’re tryting the figure out the scheme. We are not getting sacks, and the defense has not improved despite the additions of Hardy and Gregory

— The Cowboys have not lost these many consecutive games since 1989

— We have hit rock bottom as we are now the dead last seed in the NFC — just awful

— Wonder if Jerry rethinks how the roster has been built the last two seasons and gets back to being more hands-on with free agency and the NFL draft. We could see Jerry Jones become a big spender next free agency, it’ll be something to keep an eye on for good or bad

— Dez Bryant’s injury has affected him. I suspect he’s been playing at 75%, coupled with missed time in the offseason and training camp, Dez has not been in-sync physically or mentally

— From all 32 teams, only the 49ers have less scoring than the Cowboys

That’s it, not much else to say right now. This team is every bit their 2-7 record indicates. What’s your thoughts on the rest of the season? Is it time to talk more about draft prospects?
