CowboysNation just got some really bad news; Tony Romo has a broken bone in his back. The Cowboys performed an MRI and the scan revealed damaged to a different bone in Romo’s back.
Ian Rapoport suggests how long Romo will be out:
My understanding is that best-case scenario is that #Cowboys QB Tony Romo returns by mid-season. He broke a different bone than last time.

The other option may be to play with an injection in the back:
The broken bone is an injury that may linger for #Cowboys QB Tony Romo this season. I’m told he’ll likely need an epidural to play.

Either way, looks like Romo’s career is inching closer to being over. At some point Romo needs to look at his longterm health and call it a career. This wouldn’t be the last time a starting QB for the Cowboys has had to call it a career due to health.
Both Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman retired due to health from concussions. Romo may need to think long and hard about his health as well. I hope he has a speedy recovery, but I would not blame him for retiring at some point. We know he’s a warrior and will likely try to come back, but we’ll see.
Now what?
This is now the Dak Prescott show. Dak will get the call and he’ll be thrown into the fires of the regular season. I believe in Dak.
The Cowboys will look for a backup veteran to backup Prescott. The Cowboys brass are looking at a list Will McClay has on stand-by and those names are being tossed around. Michael Vick is a name that is being tossed around. Other may include vets that the Cowboys may need to trade for.
