Cowboys Could Re-visit Austin Davis; Kaepernick and Geno Options?

The Cowboys wrapped up their preseason against the Texans, and now comes the hard work of trimming the roster down to your 2016-2017 Dallas Cowboys squad. There are a few elephants in the room however; What will Dallas do with Tony Romo? Will he go on full blown IR or IR with return designation. I doubt Jerry and Co. will mothball Romo for the season, but we’ll see.

The Cowboys met with Austin Davis before the final preseason game, but nothing manifested into a contract. The Cowboys opted to sign Jerrod Johnson as the de facto emergency QB for Jameill Showers. You have to wonder if the Cowboys felt ok with Showers’ performance or will the re-visit with Davis.

Perhaps the Cowboys are waiting to see what the rest of the league does with their QBs. Ideally, the Cowboys want a QB that has some actual regular season playing time under their belt

Colin Kaepernick might have a future with the Dallas Cowboys. Of course, nothing has been confirmed. However, Tony Romo won’t be around for most of the season, so the Cowboys are on the market for a veteran quarterback, and the rumors surrounding the NFL spread are all pointing to Colin Kaepernick along with Geno Smith.

The Cowboys obviously need an insurance policy to watch rookie Dak Prescott’s back. This is despite the fact that Prescott’s performance has impressed fans and professionals alike in the preseason.

There was no question that Romo’s departure (due to a back injury) would give him the leeway to step into the starting role. However, the Cowboys are not willing to take any chances.

They have had experience with the complications that can arise when their starting quarterback is put out of commission. In 2015, Romo went down, this forcing the Cowboys to rely on the likes of Brandon Weeden and Kellen Moore.

Sufficing to say, Cowboys coaches would rather avoid the prospect of fielding similarly abysmal performances in the event that Prescott suffers an injury.

They need a veteran, and they will probably add one before the opening day. Colin, the 49ers quarterback, is obviously nearing the end of his tenure with San Francisco. The team will most likely cut him before the season starts, which makes him a candidate for the Cowboys.

Colin’s departure from the 49ers has more to do with his poor performance as a starting quarterback than the scandal surrounding his refusal to stand during the playing of the national anthem.

Colin’s place with the Cowboys is hardly guaranteed at this point; and if he chooses to take his chances with the Cowboys position, he will have an uphill battle making the team.

Most industry professionals do not expect Colin to last this season with the 49ers. San Francisco has already hinted that they would rather not keep him around for longer than they have to.

And, again, the political issues are actually secondary here. The offseason hasn’t exactly been kind to Colin. For one thing, he lost a lot of weight. The three surgeries didn’t help his physical situation either, preventing him from working out.

He also lacks the proper size-speed ratio. Every analyst you speak to will tell you the same thing; Colin is no longer the football player he used to be. In fact, he has regressed as a player and the 49ers would be foolish to keep him on their roster, regardless of their opinions about his political issues.

At the moment, the Cowboys are the top contenders to pick up Colin if the 49ers choose to cut him loose. However, Dallas has also been looking at various other veteran backups, this including Josh McCown, Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez to mention but a few.

The Cowboys are not wrong to court Colin. He has seen great success in the NFL, and he has the experience to take Prescott’s place if an injury removes him from play. However, the distractions that Colin also brings to the table might make him unappealing in the long run.
