Cowboys rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott nearly broke the Internet when he delivered one of the best end-zone celebrations of the 2016 NFL season on Sunday night.
Elliott ran right through the Buccaneers defense and scored a two-yard touchdown in the second quarter of the game, and no one could’ve predicted what happened afterward. To celebrate his 12th rushing touchdown of the season, he ran out of the back of the end zone toward the Salvation Army kettle and hopped inside of it (watch here).
His celebration was certainly entertaining, but Elliott was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct (excessive celebration) afterward.
Luckily, the penalty did not cost his team, but Elliott did say that head coach Jason Garrett was not happy about it after the game. Elliott didn’t seem to have many regrets about the celebration, though, and understandably so. It’s hard to see much of a difference from what he did as opposed to a Lambeau Leap, which is not only within the rules, but routine.
Still, Elliott didn’t complain about the fine he’ll be hit with this week, and even put a positive spin on the situation. He revealed that whatever amount he’s fined he’ll match with a donation to the Salvation Army (according to Jarrett Bell of USA Today), and that’s pretty cool.
Elliott’s decision to bring attention to a great cause such as the Salvation Army during the holidays is a noble gesture, and hopefully other NFL players or his teammates will follow suit and donate a few bucks as well.
