Following an unforgettable 28-0 season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, the Los Angeles Rams earned their first victory of the 2016-2017 season, and also their first in Los Angeles since the 1994 campaign, against a struggling Seattle Seahawks team, 9-7.
The team took major strides from their season opener, where the offense struggled to move the ball, only totaling 185 yards, and converting 10 first-downs throughout the game. Case Keenum was able to move the ball more effectively through the air this week, throwing for more than 200 yards.
It was also encouraging seeing the improved play from the offensive line, as well as the activity of the wide-receivers that were making plays all around the field, making the necessary short and intermediate catches. Kenny Britt was the leading wideout for Los Angeles with 6 receptions for 94 yards.
The defense was able to benefit from the offense’s ability to sustain drives, giving them enough energy to limit a banged up Russell Wilson and anemic Seahawks offense to only a field goal. The Rams defensive line – led by pro-bowler Aaron Donald and William Hayes – did not allow Seattle’s offensive line to settle in, leading to two sacks and seven tackle-for-losses.
The team’s secondary did enough to limit the big plays the Seahawks usually excel at, especially late in games. Trumaine Johnson, who is in need of another big season after being franchised tagged earlier this year, was able to shut down the Seattle’s best receiver, Doug Baldwin.
The most valuable player of the game was Greg ‘The Leg’ Zurlein who hit on all three field goals, from 39, 28, and 47 yards.
The Rams, who are yet to score a touchdown this season, are set to kickoff a two-game roadtrip beginning next week against a revamped Jameis Winston and Tampa Bay Buccaneers team.
