The Rams Have Several Priorities at Combine

The NFL Scouting Combine begins tomorrow and runs through March 6th which means its time for Les Snead to begin focus on how to restock their limited resources. The Rams don’t have a lot of draft capital to spend and thus must really figure out what their priorities for this season are. Sure, free agency will dictate some of it depending on what happens to Trumaine Johnson or if they can land one major free agent but nothing that happens in free agency will solve any one need. Even if they land Alshon Jeffrey they can’t just pair him with Tavon Austin or Brian Quick (if they keep him) and consider that a job well done. There are several wide receivers that could be worth using their 2nd round pick on but they could also use it to help their thin secondary or their thin offensive line corps. They still don’t have a 3rd round pick but have two 4th rounders and then at least one pick in the rest of the rounds. So there is room to somewhat improve and no one should come away from their draft assuming that they’ve atoned for last year’s cardinal sin of burning picks for Goff.

In looking at the three major areas they need to solve the Rams should prioritize wide receiver since that’s the area they have the least amount of talent and the most amount of potential draft picks to solve them. Plus, the whole theme of the post Fisher Rams has been to drag the offense to a place resembling mediocrity. The Rams might be inclined to retain Greg Robinson which wouldn’t be ideal but would allow them to just wait for later rounds to address their offensive line unless they let Robinson walk and scoop up someone that is cut by another team be it a Nick Mangold or Ryan Clady. Offensive lineman should be available to provide depth in free agency where as defensive backs and receivers will be harder to come by. The draft could solve several depth issues at wide out while linebacker remains a concern it isn’t as high on the totem pole as these other three spots. Its also possible they use one of their 4th round picks on a quarterback either as a means to filling out depth or to provide an interim solution if Goff turns out to be an irredeemable bust.
