The Los Angeles Rams continue to provide bodies for new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
The Rams announced the signing of defensive tackle Tyrunn Walker to a one-year contract, ESPN.com reported.
The 27-year old Walker spent the last two seasons with the Detroit Lions. He started the first four games of the 2015 season before he suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle, Walker started eight games last season before coming off the bench during the second half of the season.
Walker had career highs of 15 solo tackles and 11 assisted tackles in 2016. He also had a fumble recovery.
The 2012 undrafted free agent out of Tulsa signed with the New Orleans Saints to begin his NFL career. He played in 23 games with one start for the Saints in 2013-14. Walker had 14 solo tackles and five assisted tackles in 2014. He also had 2.5 sacks and forced a fumble.
For his career, the 6-foot-3, 310-pound Walker has played in 42 games with 38 solo tackles and 25 assisted tackles.
Walker adds depth to a unit that includes interior line starters Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers, and Dominique Easley, Ethan Westbrooks, Matt Longacre and Morgan Fox as backups.
The Rams currently project to have Louis Trinca-Pasat as their top backup to Brockers, their starting nose tackle, Pro Football Rumors reports. Trinca-Pasat hasn’t played a defensive snap since joining Los Angeles as an undrafted free agent from Iowa.
Walker gives the defense a veteran backup nose tackle and still has a lot of potential as a defensive lineman. He played in a 4-3 defensive with the Lions but was indoctrinated into the league playing a 3-4 base under then-New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
